From a NASCAR Fan’s View
It’s really week two of the 2026 regular season races and this weekend the Cup teams take it to the high-speed, 1.5-mile Echo Park track near Atlanta. I know this is actually the fourth race, but counting the actual points races, it is only week number two.
Basically, it is a 1.5-mile Super Speedway. Well, at least it drives like one. The speeds will be up near 200 miles per hour, and all of the same things that happen at tracks like Daytona and Talladega can happen here. The only real difference is that the high speeds are taking place on a shorter track, so it only follows that things can happen faster. They can still have the “Big One,” and they will use the draft.
Echo Park Speedway is definitely a unique track compared to others, and it usually proves to be a very interesting race, even though the same drivers run up front that usually run and finish at or near the front. That’s not a bad thing. Even though I’ve said that, it is often an unpredictable race when it comes to which of the drivers or teams wins.
After the wreck-fest at Daytona last weekend and the qualifying being cancelled this weekend, the starting lineup will be according to the way drivers finished last weekend. That will make for a very interesting situation for the way this race at Echo Park will go. It was as if half the field failed to make good time in the qualifying, and there will be some very good cars at the front and some very good cars spread throughout the middle and back of the pack.
Of course, you know what I meant when I mentioned that part about half the field failed to make good time in qualifying since there was no qualifying. From this fan’s view, that could make this usually interesting race even more interesting than it might have been had there actually been qualifying. Does anyone really believe those drivers in the middle and back of the pack are going to be satisfied with running where they’re having to start? Yeah, I kinda figured that’s what you would say. Neither do I.
When I look at the lineup, I see some drivers very good at the drafting tracks up front, some in the middle, and some at the back. In fact, I see not only drivers good at drafting, but they are in cars that are quite capable of running up front.
Just a quick look at the top ten starters or so shows a bunch of very good drafters. Just look at the front row for starters. Last week’s winner Tyler Reddick and Joey Logano. They are followed by three other good drafters, namely, Ricky Stenhouse JR, Chase Elliott, and Brad Keselowski. I’m not selling any of the others in the top ten short, either; I’m just not going to mention every driver by name. That’s because just about all of the drivers scattered throughout the rest of the field have shown themselves quite capable of running well on a fast, drafting track like Echo Park.
So, what am I talking about here? Well, for starters, I believe this could be one of the most interesting races at Echo Park we’ve seen since the point 007 second, three-wide finish in 2024. Those three drivers are Daniel Suarez, starting twelfth, Kyle Bush, starting fourteenth, and Ryan Blaney, starting twenty-second. That in itself says something about just how jumbled up the lineup is. If anyone thinks any of the drivers is going to be happy with finishing where they’re starting, well, let’s just say they are living in a dream world.
There are 400 miles for them to jockey for position from where they’re starting, and there are several pitfalls ahead for them. First of all, this fan thinks there is going to be at least one Big One that is going to change the entire race. I hope I am wrong about that, but Daytona proved that not everyone makes good decisions all race long. That’s not to mention the fact that some can get caught up in someone else’s mistake. Even though the front starters are generally strong finishers, I don’t believe even they are going to be safe from the possible troubles that can take place over the 400 miles of the Autotrader 400.
I don’t know about you, but I’m prepared for just about anything that can happen in this one. Well, that is except for one thing. What is that one thing, you may ask? That would be a completely surprise winner…
